Excalibur is, as the title suggests, an album recounting the tales of King Arthur and who better to tell them than a band from the U.K.? Iron Void hails from West Yorkshire and they turn their doom metal stylings on the Arthurian legend with their third album, courtesy of Shadow Kingdom Records. Iron Void plays a clean doom that is in line with the Black Sabbath template of slow, but not dirge-like, compositions and clean vocals that tend to mirror the melody of the guitars, creating multiple layers of heaviness. There is ample reverb on the guitars and room in the mix for the bass to lay down a good amount of low end. Most of Excalibur is enjoyable, if not overly memorable, especially for fans of Ozzy-era Sabbath with only a couple of issues. At the beginning of the album, Iron Void repeats Merlin's "Anaal Nathrak" chant from John Boorman's Excalibur film for far too long (almost a full 60 seconds) and whichever singer handles the microphone for closer "Avalon" (both bassist Jonathan Seale and guitarist Steve Wilson handle vocals according to Metal Archives) doesn't have the emotional range for this potentially beautiful song. Small flaws aside, fans of traditional doom metal and/or Arthurian legend should find Excalibur entertaining.
