The first time I heard this album I was rocking like it was 20 years ago and my initial reaction was that they were back to their young selves. It must have been a mood thing as subsequent listens showed Skycrest to be more in line with Iron Savior's later output than that of their best years (late '90s-early 2000s). The band has always produced crunchy, catchy, very upbeat power metal and this is largely true on Skycrest, the same way it was true on its predecessor, Kill or Get Killed. The emphasis is more on catchy melodies overflowing with delightful cheese than it is on crunchy guitars, though there's definitely some of that, but I think the album could have used more. Some songs just seem to call for some more crunch. In the end it doesn't matter all that much. This is a good album from a band whose "worst" albums are still entertaining, catchy and above that of many of their peers. While I'm more bound to reach for their early work when I think "Iron Savior", I'm still having a hard time not slipping this one into my playlist practically on a daily basis.
