It had to happen. With how much the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the world, it was only a matter of time before a band just went ahead and made an album about it, and it makes plenty of sense it'd be an American band at that. Immortal Guardian have been around for a while, garnering a good bit of praise for their debut back in 2018 and even headlining some festivals in Russia and Brazil. I'm not familiar with their earlier output, so I have no idea how it compares, but Psychosomatic works in that Progressive Power Metal vein that we should all be familiar with. You get complex musicianship and songwriting, pristine production values, searing melodic leads working off of dense rhythm sections, neoclassical stylings, and top-notch performances all around. There's not really anything too different about this other than it's just better than most: better songwriting, better melodies, and especially better vocals. Singer Carlos Zema is a hell of a find, sporting the crystal-clear range and delivery you'd expect, but also having a good bit of grit in his voice that gives the song a bit of a harder edge than usual. I do have to dock points for the horrible harsh vocals on "Goodbye to Farewells", and the lyrics are very on the nose and slightly preachy, but if you're looking for a solid Progressive Power Metal release to listen to while in quarantine, then you'll want to give this a listen.
