In Aevum Agere have been knocking around the Italian underground making old-school Doom for years now, and their third and latest album, Emperor of Hell - Canto XXXIV, doesn’t see them changing that in the slightest. Despite becoming a duo on this release, they still work in that thick, riff-based style that almost completely resembles Solitude Aeturnus, right down to Bruno Masulli’s strong, clear vocal delivery, so in many ways, there’s nothing too surprising about this release. The big difference is that they’ve never done it this well before, and have gone ahead and made more mature and varied compositions than before that can shift between moods and ideas in the blink of an eye without ever coming across as jumbled or confused, instead sounding rich and textured as it switches from straightforward sections to grand dramatic displays with finesse and style to spare. Songs like "City of Dis" and "Malebolge" will floor you with their detailed structures and top-notch performances, with Bruno in particular giving the vocal turn of his career as he displays more power and emotion than he ever has while sounding completely in his element. It’s great to hear the band finally putting all the pieces together to make a massive and addictive album that’ll make you come back for more, and I strongly recommend this album to anyone who loves their Doom.
