I saw the name Titan Blood and immediately assumed this German band was going to be part of the epic metal resurgence, but I shouldn't have judged a book by its cover. On The Call of the Wild (I haven't heard the debut, so I can't speak to it) Titan Blood plays a style that touches on traditional and epic metal here and there but leans more in the direction of prog and has a noticeable hard rock streak. They rely on synthesizers and keyboards as much as guitars (it sounds like there might be '80s-style guitar synths on "Signal Mountain"), with piano in the mix ("Tout es Possible") and even Hammond organ ("Signal Mountain" again). At times I feel like I'm listening to Dream Theater, at others Uriah Heep and on the closing title track, Faith No More. It is certainly not a release that is easy to categorize, kudos to Titan Blood for coloring outside the lines, but if you're going to challenge listeners, you'd better have great songs and, to my ears, there aren't any here. I don't actively dislike The Call of the Wild but there's nothing overly engaging while it is on, so at the end of each listen I can only remember that I can't remember much. If you like proggy metal with some hard rock in the mix, like the bands I previously mentioned, maybe you'll enjoy Titan Blood's take.
