Review

Incantation is a band I didn't get into when I started listening to back in 2000. I even returned the Infernal Storm CD to the store at the time! (I actually bought the vinyl edition of that album at the Incantation show in Cambridge, MA, last year—I spent nearly USD 150 on Incantation merch that night sooo... things change). Anyway... Musical tastes change over time (I don't want to say "evolve" because I've seen people switch to pop flavour-of-the-day crap, which is not exactly what I'd call evolution). Alright, back on topic. Unholy Deification shows long-runners Incantation have not lost their fire and they're firing up on all cylinders with this album. Heavy as fuck, sometimes very slow and almost doomy, sometimes speedy as hell, the album has this omnipresent heavy and dark atmosphere that is bound to freak the fuck out of your neighbours if you blast it out with the windows open. I really like how eerie this album sounds. Closing my eyes in a dark room, some of the songs sound creepy as hell, and I love it. The guitar work is absolutely intense and soul-reaching. I like how these guys mix slow, crushing heavy death metal and much faster, neck-breaking, headbang-inducing metal; it's two opposites that Incantation get to work together to fuck yourself up and make you beg for more. Fuck yeah.
