I actually had to look to see if this was a reissue of a mid-80s heavy metal album, or maybe one never released back in the day, but no. Portugal's Toxikull play it as authentically old school as it can be without having actually been there 40 years ago. Highly melodic and catchy, but with aggressive, crunchy guitar work and drums that get the head banging and the foot tapping, all coupled with clean and melodic and slightly gruffy vocals, this is 100% the recipe of classic and not-so-classic bands of the '80s. I'm thinking of Priest, Maiden, Dio, Manowar and other bands of that ilk while listening to this album. The vocals are instant earworms and singalong-inducing, but it's the guitar melodies that get me the most here—they really sound exactly like the stuff I was hearing back in the day. Insane. A lot of bands are doing this these days, but not that many do it as well as Toxikull.
