In Aeternum is a black/death metal from Sweden (as hard as that might to believe..:)) that has been around for almost ten years now. With all the excellent bands coming out of Sweden I can see how these guys may have been a little overlooked. This album is a collection of unreleased and rare tracks and at first I was thinking how can this band have this many unused tracks lying around with only two full-length albums and a couple of rehearsal demo's to their credit but apparently they have enough to fill an album. After their successful tour opening for Malevolent Creation in Europe they decided to release this before heading into the studio for their next album.

Overall this is pretty good black/death metal. Growling style vocals with mid to up tempo music. No real surprises other than the covers of "Countess Bathory" by Venom and "Abigail" by King Diamond. I will say though the King Diamond cover was an odd choice considering there are very few people that can pull that one off vocally. The album starts out very strong but then fades quickly in the end. The first nine tracks are all very good but after that you can pretty much just change the CD. The last five tracks include the King Diamond cover and four live tracks recorded in Essen, Germany during the "Plague across Europe Tour". The live songs suffer from pretty poor production and the fact that it sounds like there is no crowd there to hear it. The songs themselves are good but the production and lack of crowd response kind of just kills them.

Overall if you are a fan of the band you may want to pick this one up but I think I will just wait for the new studio album myself.
