Now, I'm not too familiar with Finland's Torture Killer. Having recently listened to the previous album Swarm in preparation for this review, I picked up on how much this lot sound like Six Feet Under. Of course being originally fronted by the much-maligned Chris Barnes (Six Feet Under, Ex-Cannibal Corpse) it's not hard to see where the SFU comparisons would come in – and it's true, these guys are basically a second rate clone . Bringing absolutely nothing new to the proverbial table, Torture Killer are very easy to criticize. However it's my job to look beyond the lack of originality and the plagiarism of SFU. Care to read on?

Drawing comparisons to their previous release, Sewers just can't match it. The riffs aren't as filthy, and the vocals aren't as guttural. However in place of that we have a thicker guitar sound with a preferable tone and new vocalist Juri Sallinen is actually a better singer on paper, just lacking that raw edge Chris Barnes has. The album cover is awesome, very suitable for a Death Metal album; I just wish the material inside could match the promise of the cover. Don't be fooled into thinking Sewers is majorly offensive, I assure you there's some enjoyment to be had – fans of this groove-laden style of Death Metal will no doubt lap this up. "The Art of Impalement" is cracking, with some evil riffage and stellar vocal work. "Scourging At The Pillar" features some particularly melodic guitar parts, which are a welcome break - certainly something I would have preferred to see more on Sewers. Overall this is a decent Death/Groove metal album that suffers mainly due to a lack of originality and repetitive riffs. Fans of Six Feet Under would certainly do well to check this out, however to all others I suggest approaching with caution.
