Review

Let me just start this review by saying this is one of those bands that I really need to find more info on. The bio information only mentioned the style of music (Emotional Dark Metal), where the band is from (Finland) and a few blurbs from other magazines that have reviewed the album already. The reason I need to find more info is simply whether they have more than this album out because if so I will have to get the others as well.

The description of "Emotional Dark Metal" is something I really don’t understand. In my humble opinion this sounds more like black metal with symphonic and epic style songwriting. The music is quite heavy with most of it being mid tempo with a lot of synths giving it that symphonic and epic kind of feel. The vocals are straight up black metal screams but it really seems to mix well with the music. The star of the album is the songwriting itself with very well crafted songs and very good musicianship being the keys. The songs are heavy with dynamics…switching from clean acoustic parts to distorted parts with ease. I would have preferred a bit more of this interplay between acoustic and distorted guitars but then again maybe I am just hungry for a new Opeth album…heh. I do have to admit though the parts of the album that utilize this the most are extremely well done and very interesting.

Overall a kick ass album those fans of a lot of genre’s can get into (allowing you can get by the black metal vocal style). Black, Goth, Doom and even a few death metal fans will find this an album well worth the purchase price. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
