In many ways, Brazilian sextet Thy Symphony have a lot going for them. Their sound sits between something that is obvious and familiar (Rhapsody, Angra, Epica), while at the same time they have moments of pure, untainted genius, where they produce sounds so heavenly and uplifting it almost reduces you tears. Fronted by both male and female vocalists, Thy Symphony and their debut, Harmonizing the World, play a hugely epic style of Power Metal with a whole load of progressive arrangements and almost gothic soundscapes. Adding to that, they have an ear for creating amazingly ethereal pieces that conjure such beautiful imagery. The way they do this is by replicating Square Enix-esque film-score music and religious-sounding choral segments within the songs. Tracks like "Broken Wings", "Sun and Moon" and the sweeping title track sound like something experienced in a dream; ghostly, yet sweet and endearing.

The feat is quite remarkable, though the twin vocalists can grate at times, as neither of them is blessed with the perfect voice. Also, things can seem a little aimless throughout; the way they flirt with mood becomes strange and incomprehensible. This originality sets Thy Symphony apart from so many of their brothers and sisters, but I think they need to hone their sound before producing their masterwork. I for one do not mind the wait.
