Tyr has been a band on the edge of my radar screen for a while, but with their latest album, The Lay of Thrym, that is changing in a big way. This album puts all the pieces together perfectly; amazing riffs, huge sing-a-long (make that shout-a-long) choruses, awesome Viking-themed lyrics and an overall excellent sound. If you aren't throwing your fist in the air or abusing an air guitar by the end of the opener, "Flames of the Free," you need to have someone check you for a pulse.

Led by guitarist/singer Heri Joenson's commanding, almost staccato shouts, Tyr continue their tradition of incredible musical performances. The lead guitar work is exemplary and I am amazed by the surprising richness of the vocal harmonies on the choruses. Tyr has combined well known elements to create their unique metal sound. Ass-kicking metal anthems like "Take Your Tyrants" and "Shadow of the Swastika" coexist with ballads ("Evening Star") and folk-inspired tracks ("Ellindur Bóndi Á Jadri") to create a fantastic album from start to finish.

The Lay of Thrym is destined to be one of my favorite albums of 2011 and beyond. Go forth and pillage the nearest record shop for a copy, you will not be disappointed.
