Nail Within is a band hailing from Israel and from what I have heard from other bands from that region as of late I was pretty eager to throw this one in and check it out. I then glanced at the press release that accompanied the disc and noticed that there were guest appearances by some people from a few of my favorite bands. Mille Petrozza (Kreator), Tomas Lindberg (At the Gates), Robert Gonnella (Assassin) and Zeev Tananboim (Salem) all do some guest vocal duties on this album. Add to all of this the production work of Harris Johns (Sodom, Kreator, Helloween) and all of a sudden that feeling of eagerness turned into a raging fuckin’ sprint to the stereo in expectation of some truly ass-kicking thrash metal. Well expectations once again kicked me in the sack because what I was expecting and what I got were two totally different things.

What I got was simply some rather boring and repetitive death/thrash metal that shows very little in the variety department. Most of the songs follow the same recipe throughout with a death metal style beginning and then adding a few breakdown sections to show their thrash metal side. The band is certainly talented enough musically to have done better since the repetitive nature of the album really brings down the enjoyment level. Maybe from reading the promo material once again I was expecting something more and since through that disappointment I am being unnecessarily harsh since there are some bright spots on the album. There just doesn’t seem to be enough of them to keep this from turning into one of those CD’s you will maybe play once in a great while which is rather disappointing in and of itself.

Overall this album had its moments although they were few and far between and I expect this band can certainly do better than this. Maybe this is one of those albums that need to grow on you but as for right now I would certainly suggest you try before you buy.
