Interviews Unsanctified

Interview with Unsanctified

Interview conducted by Barbara Williams (Crowley)

Date online: January 4, 2004

Hailz! How are you doing and what's up?

BRIAN CARREON: Doing great In the middle of making some music.

HANS FABER: What's Up?

ROBERT MARKS: What's Happening?

SEAN HARDING: ?

DON MARHEFKA: Not much, really! Taking a jam break.

Unsanctified! You even give a definition on your website. Why the name and who came up with it?

HANS: We were looking for something original and of course, you know, everything was taken, so we knew we wanted something unholy no one had: UNSANCTIFIED!!!

Unsanctified has been playing a lot of shows and your next one is scheduled for October in Tijuana, Mexico. Is this your first time playing in Mexico?

DON: No. We have played a while back. The next show in T.J. Mexico will be Jan 17, I believe. What are your expectations? The kids are crazy, so we expect the very least a mosh pit. LOL

I was hoping to see you in El Paso this month with Reign of Terror, but unfortunately it did not happen. What are your plans for touring for the rest of the year? Is a tour of the southwest a possibility in the near future?

DON: With UNSANCTIFIED anything is possible in the near future!!!!

BRIAN: We hope to do a southwest tour in the spring, so keep posted to the site!!!

Some of the shows Unsanctified has played have been pretty large, but the longest would have to be the THE LAS VEGAS METALFEST this past August. What experiences did you take from this tour? Did you have a decent turnout?

HANS: The turnout wasn't as good as expected, but I think it may have been due to the lack of promotion. A lot of kids we were talked to from Vegas said that they never heard it was even going on. Fuck it! What can you do? We had fun partying with bands, and, as always, meeting new friends!! HORNS UP!

What would you say is one of the greatest experiences when going on tour and when playing with other bands?

BRIAN: Just meeting bands and playing with bands we all love to listen to, meet new fans, seeing new shit!!!

Which songs do you like most playing Live?

HANS: As many as they let us.

BRIAN/HANS: Love "At First Rape"

DON: "Demons Of My Own Making"

When you play live, do you try to stay close to the studio version or do you like to change things up?

THE BAND Play the studio version. What you hear on the CD, we play. No bullshit!

When was the first time you performed in front of an audience?

DON: - 91'

BRIAN: -91'

HANS:- 93'

ROBERT: - 87'

SEAN: - ?

Now on stage yourself, can you remember your first concert you attended?

BRIAN: The Village People, 80'

HANS: 88' Monsters Of Rock

ROBERT: 83' Iron Maiden

DON: That I can remember – 92' Skid Row & Pantera

Have you gotten any gifts from fans? Which would you say would be the coolest or weirdest?

HANS: No, but please send me some.

DON: Sex from hot metal babes.

ROBERT: Haven't gotten shit.

BRIAN: No?

What is the next project you are working on? Are you currently working on the next album and, if so, could you briefly tell us a little about your plans for it?

We only have one release to date, Empty Veins. The new album, Banished from Heaven, will be out in February... It's 100% pure brutality!

How do you write your music and how do you get the inspiration for writing your lyrics?

DON: - I got some of my writing from the inner thoughts, fictional and not; SATANISM. It's weird. The more people have a misconception about SATANISM, the more I'm motivated to write about it. LOL!

The music scene really changed between the 70's, 80's and 90's. What would you say has been your strongest influence?

HANS: We all like a HUGE variety of shit. Some we hate; some we dig. Too many to say.

Which bands are on your list of favorites? If I were to look through your CD collection, what would I find?

BRIAN: - Dimmu Borgir, Deicide, Nile, Rise, Reign of Terror

HANS: - Death, Hypocrisy, Decide.

ROBERT: - Infamy, Iron Maiden, Diabolic, N.W.A.

DON: - Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Skid Row.

When did you start playing and how old were you when you became interested in metal?

HANS:- 10 metal at 18.

BRIAN: - 15, metal and Iron Maiden at 11.

ROBERT: - 14. The first time I heard Iron Maiden.

DON: - 8/14 MOTLEY CRUE– the LOOKS THAT KILL video.

Besides Metal, what other types of music do you listen to and what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

DON: Hard Rock/Classic Rock/Classical. I like sex with hot chicks only.

HANS: Classical/Mozart/ I like to ride quads and dirt bikes in the desert.

ROBERT: I would have to kill you. I like Jazz/Fusion? I like to drink & smoke BUD!!!

BRIAN: Industrial/Electronic/80's metal/ I like to jam with the band!

Who designs your CD artwork and who has the final word on what actually goes on the album cover?

HANS: Good question?

DON: Still in the works. We will all come to an agreement on what we want.

During a show with Reign of Terror and Adumus, a metal fan remarked that death metal was fine (ROT) but that Black metal is really no longer acceptable because the satanic content most albums have. As an atheist he sees this as a form of religion. What's your take on this?

HANS: We do not care about people's beliefs and what they do or don't believe. They don't pertain to me!!

BRIAN: If you worship satan, you may as well worship jesus, santa clause, and the easter bunny!

DON: People have a misconception of satanism and what it really stands for. There is no god higher than yourself. You should only believe in yourself more than any thing else.

ROBERT: You make your own destiny.

How about Christian metal? Anus.com had published an article about boycotting Christian metal. What are your feelings about that? What does "Metal" actually mean to you?

HANS: Christian and metal don't belong in the same sentence.

ROBERT: I sure as hell won't listen to it.

How is the music and being Unsantified connected with the person you are? Is your band image a reflection of you or completely separate?

DON: Yes. The band and the music is a true reflection of what we all are, some fact and fiction.

What's in store for Unsanctified? Where do you hope to be a couple of years from now? HANS: EUROPE, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, wherever else they will allow us to go!

ROBERT: More music and CD's for the fans and to become more and more brutal.

Any last words to fans?

HANS: Thank you for this interview. See you soon.

DONNIE: To all of our friends and fans, "stay tuned for some brutal music. We promise not to let you down."

BRIAN: Thanks! Stay brutal; keep on the look out for our next album BANISHED FROM HEAVEN.

ROBERT: Thank you. Keep supporting metal!

DON: Don't forget to check the site for a lot of bitchin' shit!!
