Magic is album #3 for international supergroup Serious Black. Their style remains consistent with plenty of melodic and power metal flourishes throughout the album. The choruses are incredibly catchy, a feat that seems to be harder and harder for bands to accomplish these days but Serious Black make it look easy. "Burn! Witches Burn!" and "Now You'll Never Know" wrap around your brain stem and sit there pulsing their sweet melodies right into your cerebral cortex. There is a good mix of crunch and keys with no weak tracks. This is a concept album about misunderstanding and fear culminating in redemption and the story flows well. I find Urban Breed's vocals to be a bit "dry" and lacking the warmth of earlier albums but, while noticeable, it doesn't slow Magic down very much. This is a band in a great groove right now and any reliance on formulas is more than made up for with superior songwriting. If you are a fan of big, bombastic albums like Avantasia's Metal Operas or later Kamelot, Magic is definitely an album for you.
