Seattle, Washington-based thrashers Fallen Angels are back and World in Decay is their third studio album in seven years. The band's previous album, Engines of Oppression, was released on Metal on Metal Records in 2010, so it's been a pretty long wait.

Since the days of Engines of Oppression, Fallen Angels changed their drummer (out is Brian Hansen, and in Steve Spitzbart) and recruited a second guitarist, Matt Be Roth, to bring in more firepower.

World in Decay is definitely a more melodic sounding effort than the band's previous two albums. Has this more melodic orientated approach done any good for Fallen Angels, well, it's up to each listener to decide. I think that an increased amount of melody in Thrash Metal is not always a good thing, but here I think that the extra melody fits them like a glove, adding some diversity to their songs. In addition to that, they can still shred like true maniac beasts, churning out blistering riffs and solos that make your ears burn in pleasure and, most importantly, their melodic Thrash sounds darn entertaining, making you go back to the album over and over again. "Into the Abyss" represents Fallen Angels' more melodic side, in which they sound like a full-blooded Heavy Metal band, whereas in such numbers as "Leading the Blind" and "The Hour of the Time" they operate in their old, more familiar territories, sounding sinfully heavy, mean and ready to thrash the ground away under our feet. The album's last, untitled ninth song adds sort of an extra taste of mystery. It's a melancholic and beautiful sounding instrumental track, lasting less than two minutes and making for a nice ending to a pretty diverse sounding record.
