A new Witchery album is always welcome in my home. They're a pretty consistent band and, while some albums are weaker than the others, there's always something enjoyable on them that make it worth your time. I Am Legion doesn't have the charm of their early albums but it shows that the band still has what it takes to deliver solid, entertaining blackened thrash. The sound is more modern but the playing still has the raw edge from their beginnings – without that this wouldn't be Witchery. Crunchy riffs aplenty, the distinctive vocals, and enough catchy songs to make you come back to it: that's their recipe and it works. I am seriously annoyed by the 2-minute silence at the end of "The Alchemist", but the album ends on a nice and very catchy note with "Apex Ghoul", so it's partly forgiven. ;) Ultimately, the band played it safe as there's nothing all that different from what they've done on their most recent albums, but in the end it's a good album and that's what counts. A safe bet for fans and maybe enough to win some new ones. |
