Exessus is a Spanish band and the fact that their album, Time in Coma, is out via EBM Records should be all you need to know we're talking 80s thrash metal. The cover art, which sort of looks like Vio-Lence's Eternal Nightmare with a red theme, teeth around the edges and a central figure (an hourglass) seeming to fall into peril certainly fits the mold as well. These are some talented musicians, with at least one degree in music, so the playing is tight. The riffing and solos are fairly typical for thrash and the heavy use of backing vocals on the choruses gives Time in Coma an Anthrax/Death Angel quality. The lyrics are the band's commentary on today's society and are laced with the requisite anger, drifting into death metal on occasion, called for by 80s thrash. So, there you go; if you live for 80s thrash, Exessus has an album for you. You've heard it before but that's why you'll like it. |
