My first impression of this was that it sounded somewhat like static. In other words, too raw for its own good. It took a few listens for it to sink in. This is indeed very raw black metal and yes, the sound is a bit too close to static for a few seconds here and there. You really have to pay close attention to get the meat out of this one but once you "get it", it's not bad at all. Where this shines is in the vocal work and the atmosphere that somehow manages to creep out of this raw and basic sound. The vocals are a mix of barking screams and a quieter, but still black metallish style. Couple that with a violent, cold and at times melodic atmosphere and you get something good out of this puppy. It's not the best stuff I've heard in the genre, but sometimes I need one like this for a change of scenery. |
