Since this band is open about their intention of playing music in the style of seminal death metal band Death, I imagine they inspire some strong feelings from fans. Personally, I find the music on their second album, Twisted Prayers, to be well executed and entertaining. If you've heard anything from early in Death's discography, you know what to expect; razor sharp riffs, rattling drums with the accuracy of an atomic clock and harsh but understandable vocals. The power of the tempo changes and how they propel the choruses forward (e.g. "Fatal Illusions") is undeniable. So is the fact the music is purposefully derivative which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view. At the end of the day, the formula of thrashy death metal pioneered by Death (and others) and emulated by Gruesome is a winner. Whether you choose to accept this "homage" and rejoice in music that sounds like one of the greatest death metal bands of all time or you feel it is a joke or gimmick is up to you. |
