Spartan Warrior is another in a seemingly endless line of bands that had a go back in the heyday of the NWOBHM, managed a couple of albums (I remember their second, self-titled effort from the cover with the skull and what appears to be hooded crows), disbanded and have come back for another round. I never heard their music before but if their fourth album, Hell to Pay, is any indication it was because they were a band looking for some kind of hook to separate themselves from the crowd and not really finding one.
Hell to Pay has a typical NWOBHM sound with a clean production and simple, riff-oriented compositions. The lyrics offer no surprises, telling tales of metal life and women. The songwriting is generic, when it isn't derivative (the riff on "Bad Attitude" is basically the same as "Breaking the Chains" from Dokken) and the vocals are limited. The guitars, particularly the lead work, are a definite bright spot in an otherwise average affair. Spartan Warrior plays inoffensive heavy metal, but I can't think of anyone besides NWOBHM completists who need Hell to Pay.
