A Message from the Past is an album of standard, chunky Germanic Power Metal from Runelord, yet another band helmed by multi-instrumentalist and workaholic Cedrick Forsberg. Forsberg handles the instruments, cranking out sharp riffs, squealing solos and machine gun drums while vocalist Georgy Peichev adds some gruff vocals. The lyrics deal with typical heavy metal topics, to wit "The Wisdom of Steel" and "Valkyries Eternal Winter" and several of the choruses feature the many-voiced backing shouts made popular by Accept back in the ‘80s. A Message from the Past is well played and hits the right notes but is ultimately little different from the recent releases by Running Wild and Grave Digger or modern acts like Brainstorm. You won’t hate it while it’s on, but it is far from essential.
