Flotsam and Jetsam have been supremely consistent over the years and The End of Chaos is the band's thirteenth full-length album of their particular brand of thrash. Vocalist Erik A.K. is blessed with a booming voice that should be instantly recognizable to most thrash fans and though he doesn't appear to have lost any of his power, on this album his singing sounds very similar throughout. I won't say he's on the same note because I'm no musician, but he uses a very similar shout/scream in a lot of places. The riffing and solos are fine, though fairly typical for West Coast thrash and new drummer Ken Mary gets ample opportunity to pound out some double kicks. My biggest gripe about The End of Chaos is the repetition in the lyrics. Songs like "Recover" and "Prepare for Chaos" repeat lines so frequently, it overshadows all other aspects of the song. This makes the album's 50 minutes something of a chore and personally, I think cutting a few songs and using the time to punch up the others would have served the band better. That's just me, your mileage may vary. The End of Chaos isn't bad, this band is too good and too professional for that. But it could have been better. |
