Thank you, Cheryl! I heard a song off this demo- "Silver Cross Brotherhood" on www.metalgospel.com about a month ago and was totally fascinated by the individual sound of this band. A few emails later (and a looooong wait on the post) and I have this excellent and tragically short demo in my grubby little hands.

If you can imagine Bal-Sagoth with folky instrumentation and a meatier guitar sound, you will be basically hearing Dagorlad in your head, or close enough. I have heard plenty of bands who mix black metal with folk, but never a band that has such solid songwriting and good ears for melody. There are hints of some other epic, atmospheric bands like Summoning or Orkrist, but really Dagorlad have a distinctive and unmistakable sound. You would not think that a 12-minute demo could manage to create an 'epic' feel, but somehow this one does it. By the time it's over, you simultaneously feel like you have been on a journey through an epic story, and like you would kill to get more. I ended up just pushing 'play' again. And again.

For a demo, the quality of the package is really excellent. Hell, it's superior by even label standards. The artwork (by the guy who did the covers for Absu and Marduk) is superb, and mostly makes up for the lack of lyrics in the booklet.

The one and only thing I can complain about on this CD is that it is only three songs long, and has given me a fearsome appetite for a full-length album that is not likely to be slaked very soon. This is a first-rate band who need to get a record deal RIGHT NOW, as there is no excuse for a band this cool to be without a label. I can only hope that the promised full album will not be too long in coming.
