Seems like Trevor Church has the exact opposite of writer's block when it comes to his 80s-inspired metal band Haunt. If Icarus Could Fly is the band's second-full length and comes barely two months after the Mosaic Vision EP, itself less than six months after the band's debut album. Watching this band crank out material takes me back to Saxon's early output when we got a new album every 8-9 months or so. The release schedule isn't the only similarity with Saxon as there are some killer cuts on If Icarus Could Fly like the rambunctious "Run and Hide", the riffy "It's in My Hands" and the snappy title track. On the other hand, there's some filler to wade through like "Clarion" and "Winds of Destiny". Both have a great guitar tone but fall into a familiar songwriting groove with choruses that are a bit faceless. And while I wouldn't call Church a bad singer, his range is limited making me wonder what heights a better vocalist could take this material to. Never mind, Haunt plays kick-ass, no-frills metal that fans of the pre-genre diaspora should be all over.
