The Seven Spirits is album number three from Denmark's Altar of Oblivion and follows the Barren Grounds EP from 2016, a release I liked quite a lot. I don't like The Seven Spirits quite as much but that doesn't mean it doesn't have some pummeling doom riffing and bruising bottom end. "Created in the Fires of Holiness" opens the album with a big riff and a brisk pace while "Gathering at the Wake" delivers a crushing atmosphere. There are a few too many slow, spare musical parts and these expose the weaknesses of the band's singer a bit too much, but that won't stop "Grand Gesture of Defiance" from steamrolling you as the album closes out. The Seven Spirits might not be the band's best work but is it still well worth checking out. |
