Third album for Austrian project Ellende, which is apparently just one guy plus some studio help. I see this listed as "ambient", but it is not that. There are ambient elements, sure, but this is overall just Black Metal with a more expansive and melodic focus. There is a definite melancholic approach in the riff work and songwriting, and this presents a very bleak landscape, with an almost Doom feel to some of the riffs. This is slow or midpaced rather than fast, and the compositions are long and multifaceted. The mix presses everything together, resulting in the vocals being almost drowned in the rest of the sound, and so the whole is more driven by feel and mood than anything else. There are some instrumental passages on this album that are actually quite beautiful, and the whole thing manages a tremendous atmosphere. If you like depressive music that is more melodic that simply crushing, then check this out. |
