ACT II – The Darkest Descent is the second half of Morbid Prototype's debut double album and is much like its sibling, as you might expect. It features the same mix of black, death and clean vocals, in a similar descending ration of how often they are used, and the playing is crushingly direct. ACT II is more melodic and features more thrash solo guitars than ACT I so it might be the most accessible of the two. I also found the songwriting a little less engaging with fewer memorable riffs or choruses, though. Like its counterpart, ACT II – The Darkest Descent ends with its best song, the sprawling "Heathens Sailing Over the Northern Tides". Again, Morbid Prototype mix vocal styles to effectively create that atmosphere of places far away and lost in time.
Combined, both discs of The Darkest Descent offer a ton of quality black/death that is both bruising and melodic and when you add the bonus material that includes Dissection, Katakysm and Behemoth covers, you're really getting a lot for your money. Unless independence is by design, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see this band scooped up and The Darkest Descent get a label release and push in the not too distant future.
