The Strategy of Chaos is the third full-length from Italian guitarist Antonello Giliberto, who I had never heard of prior to receiving this promo. Neoclassical power metal is Giliberto's chosen style, something you probably could have guessed just knowing his country of origin and seeing the picture of him playing a classic Fender Stratocaster on Metal Archives. Yes, he's good at playing the guitar, adept at both chunky riffs as well as fanciful arpeggios and lightning fast scales. The album itself is mainly instrumental with just a few choirs here and there and the songwriting is quite cinematic in places. Giliberto plays a lot of bouncy runs up and down the fret board, too many really as they get tiresome long before the nearly 57 minutes of music is over, and that is my chief complaint about The Strategy of Chaos; it feels really long. Unless you are a musician or guitar aficionado, it may not hold your attention all the way through. Fans of a cross between Yngwie Malmsteen's first album and early Rhapsody should eat this up, though. |
