I've been following this band since their debut in 2016 and High Fantasy is Gygax's third full-length of throwback traditional heavy metal. The band has opted for a stripped-down sound with relatively few effects on the guitars or vocals and just a few '70s-inspired, Hammond-sounding keyboards here and there. "Mage Lust" is one of the heavier numbers with vocal lines that remind me of something Visigoth might do, but many of the other tracks have an earlier vibe centered around upbeat riffing and a garage band simplicity. There's a little UFO here, a little Uriah Heep there, even some southern rock boogie over there which all melds into Gygax's hard rock/heavy metal stew. I keep hoping this band will release something amazing, probably because of the name and my love for the original Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game which took up many of my childhood nights. High Fantasy isn't amazing, but it is the band's best effort thus far. |
