Xantam is a one-man band and this is the first EP release after a lone demo back in 2015. The intro and the last song are quite atmospheric and melancholic, kind of a downer but in a soothing way, if that makes any sense. Overall, it's rather fast-paced black/death metal with a thrashy edge and I was reminded a little bit of early 2000s Deströyer 666 on more than one occasion. It's not as visceral as Xantam banks more on atmosphere than on leaving a path of destruction behind, and those deep, low raspy vocals just add more to that effect. There's a little Burzum vibe to the atmospheric instrumental parts that pop up here and there, for an added chilling effect. Altered State may clock in at less than 23 minutes, but it definitely makes good use of that time.
