This is one of at least three Armagedda reissues this year. Fine by me, as I have yet to hear something bad from this band. Only True Believers was originally released in 2003 but it really sounds like something out of the first half of the '90s. I'm reminded a lot of Darkthrone of that era, which can only be a good thing, but played a little bit faster. Fifty-four minutes of this stuff is a lot to take, but the album doesn't outstay its welcome with the band varying things quite a bit despite the raw and somewhat minimalistic approach. Sure, you have your chaotic, "what the hell?" barrage of barebones black metal, but they often make this sound kind of catchy and even "rocking" at times, all while taking the listener through a dark journey of abyssal hell. If Darkthrone's early black metal is your thing, Only True Believers might just hit the spot if you're looking something in the same vein, but faster and more varied. |
