Named for the doom serpent that devoured the sun, Apep are another Death Metal band with Egyptian mythic themes and imagery. You might expect them to sound like Nile, and you'd be pretty spot on. This is nowhere near as technical as Nile, but it has a similar energy and riff style. The sound is nice and heavy, with deep, chugging riffs and a lot of atonal flourishes to evoke Middle Eastern music. The vocals are a nice deep rasp, kind of reminiscent of Johan Hegg. Overall this is a package that will not grab you with originality, but delivers on songwriting, aggression, and heaviness. |
