Ominous Eclipse are an Ottawa-based Death Metal outfit that seem to be moving towards a more progressive sound with this 12-minute track, making this one of the only singles I've seen that was literally just a single song. It sounds like the band is trying to take a big leap forward with their sound on this one, but they don't quite stick the landing. As a song, "Eclipse" makes the mistake that a lot of long songs make in that it feels like it was written long for its own sake rather than for any real songwriting purpose. It's split between acoustic melodies with passable clean singing and more intensely melodic sections with harsh vocals, all of which could have been cut down by maybe a minute and not lose anything out of it. I can't say any of it is really bad, it always feels like it's all building towards something while never really getting there, leading to a composition that's without any real resolution or standout parts to it. It's not awful, you won't shut it off in disgust, but you'll find yourself kind of forgetting you're listening to it until it abruptly ends, leaving you to think "Oh, was that it? Huh." An admirable attempt, but if this band really wants to progress their sound, they've got some work to do.
