Winter Nights are a New York-based Melodic Death Metal group who have made the strange decision to make their sophomore album self-titled despite having a self-titled demo from 2008. Anyway, the music on this is moody and mid-paced, with a melancholic melodic sensibility mixed in with crunching, heavy riffing that almost reminds me of older Amon Amarth. That makes this sound more exciting than it actually is, as none of the melodies are first-rate, and the album as a whole isn't terribly memorable. At a little under 30 minutes, it's also pretty scant for a full-length, and when mixed with unremarkable songs it just kind of passes you by without leaving much of an impression. This is fine while it's on, but it lacks identity. |
