Fumigation is one of those local bands that I've heard about but, for some reason, never got around to checking out. They started advertising this (then upcoming) digital EP on Facebook a few weeks ago, so I figured this was as good a time as any to fumigate the place.
This EP is an independent digital-only release on Bandcamp (and they went through the trouble of providing a digital booklet, which I wish more bands did!), but they are signed to CDN Records, which is pretty much a guarantee that the band plays more or less brutal death metal, and that's a pretty close assessment of what's on offer here, though the band also tone that down and even get quite melodic on closer "Non Essential Service", which is a quite the contrast with the in-your-face opener "Pandemicaholic", a face-ripping wall of brutality that sets the tone for the first three songs. I mean, you start this and it's like a fucking punch in the face—like when you wake up in the morning and realize that that coronavirus stuff isn't just a bad dream. And that's pretty much what this EP is all about: fast, heavy, punishing death metal to blow up your speakers and fuck your neck up. It's not really original (it rarely is) and it's really pretty straightforward in the grand scheme of things, but throughout this sonic onslaught it is pretty obvious that Fumigation are a fine-tuned machine of death and don't have much to envy better-known bands in the genre—well, other than the notoriety, I guess. R0 5.7 may be short, but it's an inviting introduction to this band that I wish I had checked out earlier. Looks like I have some catching up to do.
