In five years, Canadian metal maniac Jo Capitalicide has put out four albums (one of covers), three EPs and a shitload of singles under the Ice War name. If you don't like black metal but you want a ton of product, Ice War is your band. I've reviewed several of these releases and can't say I've enjoyed any of them very much and that opinion hasn't changed much with Defender, Destroyer. Ice War's mix of early, thrashy metal and punk is intact so there's a lot of speed and energy bleeding through the loose, garage band playing. Capitalicide wails and shouts, sometimes irrespective of the notes he's theoretically supposed to be hitting and he bashes away on the instruments like they've done him wrong somehow. The songwriting is serviceable but not particularly diverse so there aren't any songs that stand out. If I had to describe what Defender, Destroyer sounds like, I'd say somewhere between The Sex Pistols and Di'Anno era Iron Maiden, with fewer hooks than either. Even though I don't much care for his music, I do admire Capitalicide's tenacity and productivity.
