Entangled in Sin is the second album from San Francisco's Hexx since reforming and going back to their thrash roots in 2017, and their fifth full-length overall. I thought their last one, Wrath of the Reaper, had some good moments but a bunch of generic writing as well, and I'm pleased to say that Entangled in Sin is a step up. Hexx have maintained the crisp thrash riffs, piercing vocals (on the last album I though singer Eddy Vega sounded like Jill Janus but on this one he makes me think more of Dan Beehler) and catchy songwriting. Cuts like "Beautiful Lies" and "Power Mad" are fun, get-in-the-pit songs (and a few of the bonus tracks like "Signal 30 I-5" and "Terror" are good as well so definitely find a version that includes them) but there's also depth and atmosphere on Entangled in Sin that is missing from a lot of thrash these days. Hexx don't just play 1,000 miles an hour, they slow down and let the songs simmer a bit before cranking it up again. It reminds me of those early Overkill albums which would wrap up with something slow and ominous. If you want thrash that is going to obliterate your eardrums like a dull buzz saw blade, you'll need to look elsewhere. If you want thrash that is more than just riff-scream-solo-scream-riff, this is one to check out. |
