Memories of Old is a relatively new band out of the U.K. and, as you might guess from their presence on Limb Music, they play power metal on their debut, The Zeramin Game. These guys are very much in the Italian school of symphonic power metal with high-pitched vocals uttering hooky choruses left and right, neoclassical guitar solos burning up fretboards and plenty of lush keyboards that give the songs a grandiose atmosphere. It is, of course, a concept album built around a fantasy world that fans can immerse themselves in should they choose. Memories of Old treat us to double-kick speed fests ("The Land of Xia"), mid-paced anthems ("Destiny") and the obligatory lengthy epic ("The Zeramin Game," which clocks in at just over 14 minutes) and the entire album has a folky, pirate-themed vibe courtesy of a few non-traditional instruments and sound effects/spoken word parts. This style of metal has been covered many times in the past 20 years and Memories of Old aren't breaking any long-standing conventions, but they do play as well as any band plying the same waters, thanks to a wealth of experience in Majestica, Sabaton, Grimgotts, Neuronspoiler, etc. It's a long album (even longer if you get the CD with the bonus track "The Architect's Eyes," which is not on my promo, so I can't tell you if it is worth tracking down) but if Rhapsody's Symphony of Enchanted Lands and Ancient Bards' The Alliance of the Kings are in your permanent rotation, you'll want to make room for The Zeramin Game. |
