Pounder is among the host of bands playing '80s-inspired metal and Breaking the World is their second full-length album. It's a familiar formula these guys are following; gritty vocals, twin guitar melodies and plenty of hooks. The songwriting is uneven and tracks like "Breaking the World" and "Give Me Rock" are clunky and sound like they could have used more fine-tuning. Then, all of a sudden "Hard Road to Home" comes on and instantly kicks your ass with its awesome riff and catchy chorus. This is the kind of tune all those '80s bands were shooting for, one that had wide appeal but didn't sacrifice any of the band's metallic credibility. "Never Forever" and "Spoils of War" aren't quite as good but have grown on me over repeated listens. If you like '80s metal in the vein of W.A.S.P., Keel and early Twisted Sister or modern bands such as Haunt, Striker and High Spirits, Pounder's Breaking the World is a solid release that you should enjoy. |
