The Golden Pentacle is the debut album from Marco Garau's Magic Opera and one look at the cover should make it clear it is going to contain fantasy-based symphonic metal. If a rundown of the song titles, from "Elixir of Life" to "The Sacred Legacy" and wrapping up with "Until the End of Time," makes you think of bands like Rhapsody or Ancient Bards, you'll not be surprised to learn that this band also hails from Italy and plays music with flowing keyboards, neoclassical flourishes, and occasional harsh singing to offset the clean vocals that dominate the album. It is standard symphonic power metal that is well played and sounds great with solid songs, but none that are spectacular or jump out to give this band something distinctive to hang your hat on. Keyboardist Marco Garau and company have the tools to play this style properly, but the songwriting isn't there just yet.
