This one is pretty easy: Bathory. If you are a fan of Bathory's later-period works like Blood on Ice or Nordland, then this is an album intended to sound just like that. The riffs are not as good, but then they never are, and the production is inexplicably weak on the guitar sound, without the visceral heaviness of the Nordland albums. I would say this is damming the album with accusations of being derivative, but as this was cranked out by one 19-year-old kid in Italy, I would say this really speaks well for his talent. Obviously, there was not any reason to record this except to make what is essentially a Bathory tribute, and that it is done this well tells me this kid could go places. Until then, this is a fun disc of Quorthon-worship that at least has the right idea. |
