Hammerdrone have been banging around in the Canadian underground since 2012, getting some critical praise in that time without ever really breaking out as a big band outside of their scene. I don't have any prior knowledge of their work, but A Trinity of Rage works in a hammering, epic breed of Melodic Death Metal not too far off from old Amon Amarth or maybe Be'lakor when they aren't being insufferable. They go between pugilistic pummeling and rolling melodic leads like you'd expect from that description, though I think they're more interesting when they stick to the latter than anything. The opening and closing tracks are split pretty evenly between these styles and does a solid, if unremarkable, job of it while the 10-minute epic between them does its damndest to sound like something off of Once Sent from the Golden Halls, albeit without enough steam to fully justify its length and a goofy spoken intro that tries to act tough. This EP is far from amazing, but if you like Melodeath that doesn't forget to be aggressive while occasionally being massive and tolling, you'll want to give this a listen. |
