The Great Pandemonium is the debut from Hunters Moon, a band that plays a style of melodic black metal that belies the fact they are from Australia, where the scene tends to be much harsher and more chaotic. That’s not to say songs like "Drag them to the Coffins" and "Hearse for a Barren Earth" are easy listening, far from it. Raspy vocals and tremolo riffing are the focus but there are keyboard embellishments that give their music a grander atmosphere, one that is not cold and sterile nor a hellish miasma. Early Dissection and perhaps more recent releases from bands like Ages or Kvaen should give you a hint of what to expect on The Great Pandemonium. Hunters Moon aren’t doing anything all that different, but they are doing what they do well, so unless your taste for black metal is limited to the ultra-low-fi and/or raw, they are worth a listen. |
