Seattle’s Greyhawk used the extra time afforded them by the pandemic-induced lack of touring to give us their second EP, Call of the Hawk. Their brand of epic metal continues to get more direct with in-your-face riffs and vocals right at the front of the mix shouting out one catchy chorus after another. The singer sounds a lot like Visigoth’s Jake Rogers, so much on "Steelbound" that I had to look to make sure it wasn’t a guest vocal. That song, along with "Call of the Hawk," once again reminded me of Power and the Glory/Crusader-era Saxon, not in style so much, but in the way the songs are put together. On the flip side, "Demon Star," easily the best cut on the EP with some sharp neoclassical lead work, and "Take the Throne" each have a sweep to the atmosphere that isn’t as prevalent on the other songs. Greyhawk aren’t doing anything new on Call of the Hawk, just delivering more of their brand of ass-kicking traditional metal. If their previous releases were up your alley, don’t hesitate to grab this one. |
