Sometimes I just need chaotic, take-no-prisoners, raw black metal and that’s exactly what Bat Magic serve up on the Feast of Blood EP (most places I see the track listing as just one song, but my promo is divided up into four separate tracks, each with its own title). After an acoustic intro with a Mediterranean flavor, it is all tortured howling and guitars that severely abuse the melodies they are playing without letting it go, like a cat playing with a mouse. I like the drum sound on "Blood Pact of Ordo Vampyr" because it has an organic sound as it pounds away, far from the plastic blasting you often get with black metal. It does ramp up on "Solis Mors" but then there’s a persistent cymbal that picks up the haunting, analog vibe. There’s nothing new here, just some raw, second-wave aural chaos and, as I said at the outset, sometimes that’s all I need.
