Despite the title of their debut album, Texas is Coming for You, Highways is a band that is based in the state of Nebraska and also features musicians from Ukraine, Nigeria and India. Perhaps surprisingly, that mix of musical cultures plays stripped-down heavy metal with an ‘80s US metal sound, notably the early stuff from West Coast acts like W.A.S.P., Keel and Mötley Crüe. Songs like "Arrow One", "Texas is Coming for You" and "Early Warning" follow a similar formula of find a kick-ass riff to ride, saddle it with catchy vocal lines and show it off with some sweet lead work. There are no revelations on Texas is Coming for You, but every song is a cut above a lot of the current new wave of traditional metal out there. If you are looking for straight up headbanging metal, Highways is a band to check out. |
