Let There Be Witchery is the fifth full-length album (amongst a host of splits, singles, EPs, etc.) from Midnight. I found the first few efforts by this band that I reviewed to be far too chaotic and unstructured to be enjoyable. It's like lone member Athenar couldn't decide between raw black metal and punk-influence thrash, but with Let There Be Witchery he brings these elements into better balance. I hear a lot of Venom and Motörhead woven throughout Let There Be Witchery, always good starting points for black/thrash. Personally, I enjoy the faster stuff like "Nocturnal Molestation" and "Snake Obsession" where the guitars have a great, Fast Eddie Clarke sound and the lead work is also reminiscent of the late Motörhead guitarist. These songs sound like something from Motörhead's Overkill album just way more evil. The slower (by comparison, nothing is really "slow" on this album) songs like "Villainy Wretched Villainy" and "Devil Virgin" aren't too bad either, spewing bile and hatred like Venom in their earliest days. There is plenty of black/thrash metal to choose from these days, but I think Midnight has put together a nice, savage slab of it on Let There Be Witchery. It honors the past but has a sound of its own and that alone makes it worth checking out.
