I first reviewed Mourn the Light as part of a split they did with Oxblood Forge in 2019, and I wasn't impressed. Despite my lukewarm review, the band sent me their debut album, Suffer, Then We're Gone, and man, I'm glad they did. The music on this album is far superior to what I remember on the split with big, fat riffs that are fuzzy without being sludgy and clear, emotive singing. Of course, Candlemass is going to come up in almost any review of doom metal and their influence is present in the thundering guitar/bass on "When the Fear Subsides," "Suffer, Then We're Gone" and "Blink of an Eye," but it isn't all slow crushing tempos. In fact, many of Mourn the Light's songs are mid-paced with some rather quick passages, but in all cases there's a melancholy to the melodies and singing that establishes atmosphere without being oppressive. The vocals are good, if not amazing, but they complement music quite well. I really enjoyed Suffer, Then We're Gone each time I played it and if your tastes include doomy heavy metal like Argus and bands of that ilk, you should give it a listen. |
