Faruln have been around since 2014, doing what any self-respecting Black Metal would: releasing several singles, demos, and an EP before getting out a full length nearly a decade after forming. It seems like they spent that time wisely and refined their craft over the years, because their full-length debut, Anti Spirit, is a damn solid example of Swedish Black Metal that sounds like it was ripped straight from the '90s. You'd think that would make them a hellish blast-fest like Dark Funeral, but they're honestly closer to a more stripped-down Dimmu Borgir in their early days with their slower tempos and complex compositions, with little nuances and details scattered throughout that border on being progressive. Standouts are kind of hard to pick, as every song is filled with a dark, oppressive atmosphere that weighs down on your neck like the sum of your sins come to haunt you, all while sporting some killer musicianship that's sometimes surprising and always intense. Strongly recommended for those in need of the classic Swedish sound with a twist.
